Probabilmente l'ideale filosofico più alto all'interno delle antiche credenze teutoniche era quello del destino o del Wyrd.
Era considerato quale un'entità, se possiamo definirla così, prevalente su tutto in natura, e a cui tutti sono soggetti. Vita e morte, libertà o schiavitù, felicità o dolore, tutto è in qualche modo collegato al Wyrd, che, tra l'altro, è anche una variante del nome "Urd", la nostra dea del destino.
Nei nostri antichi racconti, c'è la profezia del Ragnarök, la fine dei secoli, dove il nostro mondo sarà distrutto in una grande conflagrazione, per far posto ad una nuova e lunga esistenza, ad un nuovo ciclo.
Quando gli dei sapranno che la grande battaglia è arrivata, lo faranno equipaggiandosi con calma ad esser pronti per il combattimento, quindi, avanzeranno con altrettanta calma, sul campo di battaglia.
Vanno con tranquillità perché comprendono e si fidano della saggezza di Wyrd. Sapranno che è giunto il loro momento di combattere e morire per un domani migliore.
Invece di essere prigionieri di emozioni, come paura o ansia, accettano il loro destino e fanno ciò che deve essere fatto.
In una delle nostre fonti, Freyja ci dice: “La salvezza attende i liberi, finalmente mi rivedranno. Tuttavia, solo posso riconoscere come libero solo chi non è schiavo di un altro né dei propri impulsi”.
Questo si riferisce alla succitata stanza dell’ Hávamál (16), che ci dice che non dobbiamo essere governati dalla paura, ma piuttosto accettare ciò che è. Moriremo tutti un giorno; questo è un dato di fatto, non possiamo negarlo. La Forza, la vera forza, sta nell'accettare questo destino ed affrontarlo con coraggio, senza emozioni.
Questo non vuol dire che dovremmo allontanare le nostre emozioni o tendere allo stoicismo, dobbiamo solo tenere sotto controllo i nostri impulsi e non lasciare che essi diventino i padroni di noi stessi.
Quando accade qualcosa di brutto è facile arrabbiarsi, incolpare l'universo, scalciare, urlare e lamentarsi, ma ciò è del tutto inutile. Ciò non ci porta da nessuna parte. Il destino non è né positivo né negativo, è solo il destino. Tutto ciò che facciamo o in cui siamo coinvolti può avere conseguenze buone o cattive, a volte anche entrambe.
Quando ci rendiamo conto che il mondo non gira intorno a noi e che non tutto andrà a modo nostro, possiamo iniziare ad accettare la nostra posizione nel grande progetto del Wyrd.
Tutto è una scelta; ogni giorno facciamo delle scelte nei nostri rapporti con gli eventi e nei percorsi che intraprenderemo. Non possiamo determinare cosa succede al di fuori di noi stessi, possiamo solo selezionare i mezzi migliori per gestire le situazioni man mano che ci arrivano.
Quando siamo governati dalle emozioni, anche le nostre scelte lo sono, il che porterà il più delle volte al disastro.
Devi fare in modo di prendere decisioni in modo razionale, avere il coraggio di guardare oltre la paura, il dolore, la rabbia o l'odio e fare ciò che sai essere giusto, oggettivo ed efficace.
Piuttosto che l'emozione, lascia che la tua coscienza sia la tua guida, raramente ti guiderà nell’errore.

Probably the highest philosophical ideal within the ancient Teutonic beliefs was that of fate or Wyrd. It was looked upon as an entity, so to speak, prevalent in all of nature, to which all are subject. Life and death, freedom or enslavement, happiness or sorrow, everything is somehow connected to Wyrd, which, by the way, is also a variant of “Urd”, our goddess of fate.
In our ancient tales, there lies the prophecy of Ragnarök, the end of the ages, where our world will be destroyed in a great conflagration, to make way for a new existence. When the gods know the great battle has arrived they will calmly equip themselves for combat, then advance onto the battlefield.
They go calmly because they understand and trust in the wisdom of Wyrd. They will know that their time has come to fight and die for a better tomorrow. Rather than being bogged down by emotions, such as fear or anxiety, they accept their fate and do what must be done.
In one of our sources, Freyja tells us “Salvation awaits the free, at last they shall see me again. Though, him alone may I recognize as free who is no slave of another nor of his own impulses.”
This relates to the above quoted Hávamál strophe (16), which tells us that we must not be ruled by fear, but rather to accept what is. We are all going to die one day; this is a fact, no denying it.
Strength, true strength comes in accepting this and dealing with it boldly, without emotion. This is not to say that we should reject our emotions or strive for stoicism, we just need to keep our impulses in check and not let them become our masters. When something bad happens it is easy to get angry, blame the universe, kick and scream and complain, but this is futile. It gets us nowhere.
Fate is neither positive nor negative, it just is. Everything we do or get involved with can have good or bad consequences, sometimes even both.
When we realize that the world does not revolve around us and that not everything will go our way, we can begin to accept our position in the grand design of Wyrd.
Everything is a choice; we make choices every day in our dealings with events and the paths we will take. We cannot determine what happens outside of ourselves, we can only select the best means of handling situations as they come to us.
When we are ruled by emotions our choices are as well, which will lead to disaster more often than not. You have to condition yourself to make decisions rationally, to have the courage to look past fear, sorrow, anger or hate and do what you know is right, objectively and effectively.
Rather than emotion, let your conscience be your guide, it will rarely steer you wrong.
